BIOGRAPHY

ROYERE Jean

Jean Royère was born in Paris in 1902. After his studies at Cambridge, he worked in banking and commerce and then, in 1931, he began to work in decoration. For two years he familiarised himself with the trade with a manufacturer in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, then he joined Pierre Gouffé, who was his publisher until 1942. In 1934 he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and in 1935 at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. His first pieces of furniture are very pure and without decoration. After the war he designed furniture with unusual shapes and used steel or perforated sheet metal. In 1942 he opened his own gallery and a few years later branches in Cairo, Beirut, Peru and Iran. Heads of state such as King Farouk, King Hussein and the Shah of Iran placed important orders with him. He ended his activities in 1970 and died in 1981.
