Jean-Baptiste Huynh was born in France in February 1966, to a French mother and a Vietnamese father. A self-taught artist, he mastered photographic, lighting and printing techniques to the point of developing a personal style. His pure and timeless photography is recognizable in widely varied themes and subjects, including portraits, nudes, minerals, and plants, as well as spiritual symbols and emblematic masterpieces. Jean-Baptiste Huynh’s principal themes include the human gaze, self-image, the play of light, timelessness, and an attempt to capture infinity. His photographic work takes shape through the scenography of his exhibitions. He is the author of 15 personal books. Whether it is about a country, for a major museum or around an abstract theme, he conceives and develops each one before taking the photographs themselves, bringing his sensitive eye to bear on each subject. Jean-Baptiste Huynh considers books to be integral to each of his artistic projects and the full expression of his vision. A Villa Médicis Hors les Murs laureate, Jean-Baptiste Huynh exhibits in galleries international museums. In 2002, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie presented the exhibition YEUX, and an accompanying volume of portraits by Jean-Baptiste Huynh of major international photographers and painters. In 2006, the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris devoted a retrospective to Jean-Baptiste Huynh, LE REGARD A L’OEUVRE, which brought together his studies of the human face in a variety of world cultures. In 2012, the Louvre invited him to stage REMANENCE, a solo exhibition bringing together new work inspired by objects from the Museum’s collections. In 2019, the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques – Guimet, in Paris, invited him to show INFINIS D’ASIE, a retrospective of his body of work made in Asia over the past 25 years, along with his interpretation of the museum collections. On the invitation of the Chairman, he was also curator-scenographer for the exhibition. He is currently working on portraits of the Massaï in Kenya and a book concept around the theme of energy.
